Average valuations have increased in North America but fallen in European football

Clubs in the “Big Four” leagues in North America experienced significant valuation growth in 2021. On average, clubs in the National Hockey League (NHL) increased 35.9%, led by the Edmonton Oilers whose valuation more than doubled, while there was double-digit growth in both the NFL and NBA. By contrast, the average valuation of the Top 32 European football clubs declined -14.9% in 2021.

These movements reflect the latest round of domestic broadcasting rights deals: new agreements in North America saw increases of 74% (NFL), 19% (MLB) and 169% (NHL), while annual contract values fell for three of the European “Big 5” leagues, with only La Liga’s deal seeing an 1% increase.
