New FIFA rules mean over €500 million of players could exit Russian football

Under temporary employment and registration rules invoked by FIFA, foreign players at clubs in Russia and Ukraine are considered “out of contract” until 30 June 2022 in light of “the exceptional situation deriving from the war in Ukraine”. Club football is currently suspended in Ukraine but continues in Russia.

This could result in over €700m worth of talent exiting those countries, of which €492m are currently playing for clubs in the Russian Premier League.

The first players to officially suspend their contracts were Georgians Luka Gagnidze and Luka Tsulukidze of FC Ural Yekaterinburg.
